Guide to Interaction Targeting: Trigger Engages at the Right Time

As a publisher, you know that timing is everything. The difference between a bounce and a conversion often comes down to delivering the right message at the right time. But how do you pinpoint that perfect moment?

We're thrilled to introduce the answer: Interaction Targeting.

This feature, now available in the Admiral Journey builder, allows you to trigger engagements based on your visitors' real-time behavior on your site. It’s a smarter, more intuitive way to connect with your audience, and it requires zero custom code.

What is Interaction Targeting?

Interaction targeting is a feature that allows publishers to trigger engagements based on how a visitor behaves on their website, such as intending to exit the page, scrolling to a certain depth, or clicking on a specific element. Instead of showing generic messages, you can now launch contextual offers, messages, and calls-to-action that align perfectly with the user's journey.

Why Publishers Need Interaction Targeting

Integrating this level of behavioral targeting into your strategy offers significant advantages:

  • Boost Conversions and ROI: By responding to user intent, you can deliver highly relevant offers. Imagine presenting a subscription discount the moment a user on your pricing page becomes idle, or showing an ad-free pass offer just as they move to exit. These context-aware prompts are far more likely to convert.

  • Enhance the User Experience (UX): Because engagements are triggered by a visitor's own actions, they feel less intrusive and more like a helpful, natural part of the browsing experience. This builds trust and encourages visitors to stay on your site longer.

  • Save Time and Technical Resources: Previously, implementing this kind of advanced targeting required custom JavaScript and developer involvement. With Interaction Targeting, these powerful capabilities are built directly into the Journey builder, empowering you to create and launch sophisticated campaigns in minutes.

The Interaction Conditions

Interaction Targeting puts a full suite of behavioral triggers at your fingertips. Here’s a look at what you can do:

  • Exit Intent: Engage a visitor the moment their cursor moves off the page, signaling they intend to leave. This is your last, best chance to capture their attention with a compelling offer.

  • Scroll Depth: Trigger a message after a visitor has scrolled through a specific percentage of a page. A user who has scrolled 75% of the way down an article is highly engaged and a perfect candidate for a newsletter signup.

  • Time on Page: Target visitors based on how long they’ve been on a specific page. This is great for engaging users who show sustained interest in a topic.

  • Time Idle: Re-engage visitors who have gone inactive for a set period. Perfect for nudging users who may be hesitating on a checkout or subscription page.

  • Element Exists: Target users if a specific element (like a ‘New Message’ icon or a particular class) is present on the page.

  • Element is Visible: Show an engagement only when a specific element (like a video player or call-to-action button) is visible on the user's screen.

  • Element Click: Trigger an engagement immediately after a user clicks on a designated element, allowing for instant, contextual follow-ups.

  • Element Hover: Target based on elements a vistor has hovered over and show engages to visitors that have shown interest in specific items on your site.
